The new breed of small cars with an ‘A’ rating do over 70 miles to the gallon and so would cost only £325 to do 5000 miles, with zero road tax.
At 35 mpg the cost goes up to £650, and at 20 mpg the cost per 5000 miles is as high as £1,136. Based on £1 per litre

Villagers reduce car size and journeys
Mike and Karen downsize:
Following an energy audit with Hilary we realised that our current car, a Honda CRV, was costing a fortune in petrol – we worked out that on a trip to Scotland in May 2005 we had filled up 7 times in 10 days at a cost of £216. We had been considering renewing with a similar vehicle but decided to downsize, change to a diesel engine and ditch the 4WD. Since buying our Toyota Corolla we haven’t looked back. On a similar trip to Scotland we did 550 miles on a tank of fuel and now regularly exceed 50 mpg. Contact Hilary for your energy audit on 0800 512012
Richard and Louise are car sharing:
We established a car sharing group for school runs and are using an economic diesel vehicle.
Sunday Papers Delivery:
Six journeys to collect Sunday papers are now reduced to one, to join in contact Marilyn on 501933.
Did you know…
There are youngsters in Japan know as ‘Mileage Maniacs’, these are not boy racers, but get their thrills from competing to get the highest number of miles out of their tank of fuel.
They are getting up to double the expected miles per gallon!
Also known as Zen Driving, there is something rather attractive about the idea of laid-back gentle driving that also saves fuel. By following the driving tips on the blue card and planning trips to avoid unnecessary journeys it’s possible to reduce your fuel costs and your carbon footprint without changing your vehicle.
