Howard saves over £100 a year replacing old Chest Freezer

“I have been monitoring the household electricity usage since November 2003.

I take the meter reading at the start of each month and put it on a simple spreadsheet that calculates the monthly and annual usage.

In June 2005 we replaced our 20 year old chest deep freeze with a modern “A” Rated freezer the same size.

Our electricity usage showed an immediate drop.

After 12 months we could see the full year effect which showed our annual usage had dropped by around 1200 units per year, a cost saving on our tariff of £150 per year.

That was a pretty good payback for our new freezer!

We have been taking other action such as switching units off rather than leaving on standby but my estimate is that most of the reduction is due to the new freezer.

Taking monthly readings certainly encourages us to keep an eye on the little actions that add up to significant costs, such as turning off unused lights and items on standby.” Howard Betts

Howard also takes monthly readings of oil and water, and is willing to help with oil tank measurements to make monthly readings simple, and to help set up a fuel readings spreadsheet.
