John & Mary use energy monitor to save over 25%

plugs

It is amazing how blithely one takes things for granted and nothing more so than the fact that you can throw a switch and hey-presto the TV comes on etc. Inevitably one takes little notice of the amount of power used, well that’s until the bill arrives. So it was with great interest that I borrowed the electricity use monitor and really found out just what each appliance used. Rapid action followed: the old freezer in the garage which always iced up and had an “icy bottom” and the larder fridge we have had for years were rapidly replaced with A+ rated Bosch fridge and freezer (purchased from Foxalls in Bridgnorth, and cheaper than the large multiple stores, plus excellent advice and service).

I always filled the kettle up when making a hot drink, no longer. Yes, standby uses electricity, some more than others, but it all adds up. (see below)

So now I try to make sure that everything is turned off when not in use and recently bought a Sony TV which has an OFF button. It is hard to say how much I have saved, certainly the energy of the fridge and freezer will have been reduced by half and all the other little bits help.

Perhaps the most telling fact was that the electricity bill which arrived this month was down by 25% over the previous 3 months, in spite of recent price rises.
Now that is some saving!

Standby for savings

The average UK household electricity use of appliances on standby is now over £42 per annum, but do you know how much yours add up to?

Remember that just 1 watt on standby multiplied by 8760 hours per year adds up to £1.30.
Here are some common wattages on standby:

Some modern Washing Machines, Kettles and even Toasters may also be using power on standby.
