Together we can make a difference

Log boilerIt’s easy to feel powerless in the face of a huge problem like climate change, but by uniting everyone around immediate, effective and achievable action, 10:10 enables us all to make a meaningful difference.

What is 10:10? The plan is simple: we work together to cut our carbon emissions by 10% in 2010.

The campaign has already received over 42,000 pledges from individuals, plus over 1000 organisations, companies and councils, including the cabinet and back bench MP’s.

Why 10% in 2010? While politicians argue about targets for 2020 and 2050 the scientists tell us that deep cuts are needed quickly, and 10% is about that needed in the UK next year.

What’s the point of the UK acting alone? The campaign has been launched in the UK but will be spread to the rest of the developed world, that also need to make 10% cuts.

It’s not easy being green. 10% is easy for those that have done little so far; on average each of us in the UK is responsible for 14 tonnes CO2 a year, so the average saving needed is 1.4 tonnes. Here in Little Wenlock however most of us have already made some of the easy cuts, so here are some ideas to choose from:

Heating & Insulation- average emissions 3 tonnes gas, 5.5 oil
Average saving in tonnes CO2
Top up loft insulation to 270mm & draught proof doors & skirting

What now?

Little Wenlock joins 10:10 campaign

10:10 is a major new national campaign to cut our carbon emissions by 10% in 2010. Many individuals, businesses, celebrities and organisations have already pledged their support. The idea is not only to together start making the sort of cuts in emissions that scientists tell us are needed, but also to send a message to the politicians that we want tough action at the Copenhagen conference in December.

Show your support by making your commitment on the web site (www.1010uk.org) and putting up a Carbon Footprint Poster outside your house. You can download a blank poster from here, pick one up from the Church on 27th Sept., or ask Hilary 505547.

Download a pdf - print it off, write in your details, then laminate it if possible (CRed can help).

Or download a Word file from here and type in your details before printing.

There will be carbon saving ideas to choose from in our next newsletter, the Guardian and the Sun.

Next meeting: Monday 30th October, 8pm, in the Pub,
