John has been lining his walls with Sempatap Thermal

plugs

What is it? It is a quarter inch thick layer of foam insulation with a fibreglass layer to the room side. It comes in a roll 12.5 metres long by 1 metre wide and is attached to the wall by an adhesive similar to copydex. Once on the wall the joints are sealed with sealant and the wall is then ready for papering, painting or even tiling.

Is it expensive? Each roll cost me £136.30 with adhesive £22.79 and sealant at £5.40 to date I have done all but the kitchen (ie living room, bathroom and three bedrooms) using 5 rolls.I obtained various discounts through the energyefficiency advice centre and obtained the brochures
from them originally.

Has it made a difference? Due to changes in circumstance it is not easy to compare heating bills before and after however the bathroom is noticeably warmer and the impression is that the house warms up more quickly.

Was it easy to put up? It did not involve too much sweat or swearing; the preparation was the worst part as I had to hack down the plaster cornice and remove the skirting board.

Why use it? The construction of our bungalow does not allow for cavity wall insulation, so this was a DIY option, but it can also be used to insulate the older, solid walled houses.

The alternatives would be to install insulated plaster board (dry lining), or a separate layer of insulation then plaster board. We hope for a report from someone doing just that in a future newsletter.
