Coalmoor Dry Processing Site : latest situation October 2008

At recent meetings, the Candles Liaison Committee discussed the latest draft plan with Veolia who wish to create a more environmentally friendly use of this former coal processing site.

Most of the industrial infrastructure has been removed, and all is to go. A rubble scree bank will be created in the north east of the site, and the committee has asked for this scree bank to be broken up with areas of green using material from the bund and seeding. All wetland areas, perimeter fences and the existing footpath are to be retained.

Mr P Lambert (Shropshire Wildlife Trust) described the intended result of restoration as a conservation grazed site. Members of the Liaison Committee asked that natural succession be aided by some seeding/planting of the site to give it a kickstart.

Councillors E Roberts and P Hutchings have copies of the draft plan which parishoners are invited to examine.  

The Candles Liaison Committee continues to meet at least quarterly with special meetings when necessary. As of March 2009, presentation of the Coalmoor DP site restoration plan is imminent. Pleasingly, Veolia and the Environmental Agency have achieved good management practice of the leachate problem such that levels are now well below the compliance limit thus preventing pollution of surrounding areas and streams. A revised gas plan has been agreed for the operational site. Seeding of the north east Candles flank is about to take place.
