Little Wenlock Blog
We have started a blog associated with this website at http://www.littlewenlock.org/blog
For those of you not familiar with blogs, it is a kind of online diary. It can be quickly updated by the website editor or others in between our regular monthly updates on this website - so if something comes up, we can let you know straight away.
The other advantage is that people can leave comments or questions - for instance if anyone is looking for relatives or ancestors from the area, they can post their enquiry, and if anyone can help, they can put a reply.
We hope you will have a look and try it out! If you have any problems with the blog, please email the webmaster or the website editor.
Rats, Rats, Rats …….
We are informed that the past year has seen an upsurge in rat problems in some parts of Little Wenlock. Anyone having a particular problem should be aware that Telford & Wrekin offers a free service to treat rats and mice in domestic premises.
If you wish to report a problem relating to pest control please call the Customer Services Team on 01952 384384 or email envmaintcs@telford.gov.uk.
At the same time there are a number of things you can do to prevent or discourage infestations.
Specifically:
- Avoid leaving scraps of food lying in the garden;
- Use specialist feeders or tables to feed wild birds rather than spreading food on the ground;
- Place all food stored in sheds and garages in sealed plastic or metal bins;
- Make sure all holes larger than 25mm (1”) diameter in outside walls are blocked, paying special attention to openings around pipes drains or vents.
- Check airbricks, where present, to ensure they remain undamaged;
- Remove all soiled bedding and spilled foodstuffs regularly from animal hutches;
- Prevent rodent access to the undersides of garden decking wherever possible;
- Avoid placing waste food in the compost heap;
- Ensure compost heaps are adequately covered and sealed at the base and sides.
- Keep the top of all wheelie bins firmly closed at all times; and,
- Clear-up any outside piles of loose wood, debris, old furniture and rubbish that can be used as nesting sites.
Manchester City Council produces an excellent leaflet with advice on domestic rat and mouse control: you can read or download it here.
