Industrial Heritage of the Rural Parishes around the Wrekin

The Industrial Heritage research group was formed in 2005, following the launch of the Down to Earth around the Wrekin project developed by the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership.  The aim of the group was to identify and photograph the historic industrial and transport sites in the parishes of Leighton & Eaton Constantine, Little Wenlock and Wroxeter & Uppington, and to research their history.

The work of the group is to be published in two parts.  The first part (available late 2008) includes an overview of the area with a gazetteer of sites, and papers on coal mining, stone quarrying, iron making and industrial unrest.  In the second part (now published) there are two in-depth studies:

*‘Steeraway and the Little Wenlock Lime Industry’, by Lance Smith & Roger Howells;

    and

*‘The Great Ancient Road’ (Watling Street, the Holyhead Road and the A5),

    by Neil Clarke.

Copies of ‘The Industrial Heritage of the Rural Parishes around the Wrekin Part II’ are available price £4.00 (or £4.50, including postage) from the research group’s coordinator, Neil Clarke, Cranleigh, Wellington Road, Little Wenlock, TF6 5BH (tel.504135).  Cheques should be made payable to ‘Wrekin Local Studies Forum’.

Julia Kaminski Fundraising Project: Bob a Job for Bears

Everyone loves a teddy bear, especially the younger ones among us – but unfortunately life is no picnic for many real bears, which continue to be persecuted the world over; shot for their skins, kept in cages on bear farms for the extraction of bile, in cages in restaurants merely for the ‘amusement’ of visitors, or forced to ‘dance’ for tourists, which inevitably involves beating them into submission.

Wouldn’t it be nice to see them all free and living a natural life, the way you see them sometimes on wildlife programmes, cuddling their cubs and catching salmon in the rivers?

Over the next year I need to raise a large sum in support of the World Society for the Protection of Animals, which is building a sanctuary for brown bears in Romania. This is just one of hundreds of projects they run all over the world to help animals in distress. They are now in the process of building a sanctuary so that they can rescue captive, abused bears and release them into a semi-wild environment for them to spend their last days.

In order to raise funds, amongst other things a group of us are doing a sponsored walk next September, in the mountains in Romania. It’s not a long walk – only 50 miles – and so I know I won’t raise the required amount of £1,700 by asking my family and friends to sponsor me a few pence a mile!

Therefore I plan to hold several fundraising events in the village. In addition, to raise as much money as possible for the bear sanctuary, I’d like to do odd jobs in my spare time for anyone in the local area, over the next year. My prices will be very reasonable.

Just some of the jobs I'm willing to do: Lawn-mowing, Gardening, Pet feeding/walking, Car-washing, Shopping (food, pharmacy, emergency supplies!), Ironing, Taxi service, Baby-sitting, Painting

Any other reasonable request considered!

Do give me a ring if you have something you think I may be able to help with, even if it’s not on my list; if you don’t have a job that needs doing but feel inspired to sponsor me on my walk, that would be fantastic, too.
