Local Councillor Shadowing Award for young people - June 2011

This award has been designed to recognise young people’s understanding and involvement in local democracy. It has been developed to offer a superb leadership experience for young people. Councillors will benefit from their interaction and learn something new in the process.

What are the benefits?

Young people are keen to make a real difference in their local communities and councillor shadowing is a great opportunity for them to share their concerns and aspirations with local leaders.

How does it work?

The key component of the award is that young people must spend ten hours shadowing their local councillors in their communities and evidence their experience in a downloadable log book. This is then submitted to the British Youth Council for moderation and in turn submitted to the examination board—ASDAN.

How much does it cost?

The cost is per young person log book submitted which is £30. However Little Wenlock Parish Council will pay that fee for young people resident within the parish who take part.

To find out more, or express an interest, contact a parish councillor or the parish clerk who has an example of the log book.

Councillor Shadowing Award - Update November 2011

During September 2011, Laura Pennells a student and resident from the village, was awarded an opportunity to “Shadow” a Local Councillor.

Cllr Alan Lees volunteered for the role, and an introductory discussion was held with Laura on 21st September, in order to formulate a programme.

In addition to an introductory session, the topics to be covered have included:

The programme will have a total duration of 10 hours, over approx. 6 month period.

Laura has said that she has found the experience invaluable, and it will assist in preparation for her future career preferences.

Young persons Duke of Edinburgh award for voluntary work

One of the most popular walks within the village is the “Tom Pickering Benchwalk” on the way to Swan Pool off Buildwas Lane

During the winter months, parts of this walk particularly along low-lying sections, become water logged due to poor drainage.

In order to remedy this on going problem, and to meet the requirements of a local young person wishing to embark on a Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, a project was proposed by Little Wenlock Parish Council. William Davidson of “The Old Hall” Church Lane, has volunteered to assist with the project, which comprises pathway clearance of shrubbery, bracken and grasses, followed by raising approx 70 metres of the pathway by spreading “Planings” – used tarmac, to a thickness of 1cm to 10cm.

William will be supervised during this activity by LW Parish Council, and will be assisted with heavy material moving / rolling equipment operated by staff generously provided by SP Holding Group.

Clearance work was completed by November 5th, and it is planned to raise the path levels during weekend of 26th and 27th November 2011.

William will have justly deserved his Duke of Edinburgh award on completion of the project, and the walkers of Little Wenlock should benefit by a dry pathway during the coming winter.

Trading Standards - Trader Registration Scheme

The Trading Standards Services in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin operate a Trader Register Scheme for small home improvement traders in the area. The Register was launched in 2007 and we have almost 500 local members.

The Scheme was developed because of concerns from the public about rogue traders and some people simply didn't know where to start to appoint a tradesperson they could trust. Businesses who apply for the scheme are checked out by Trading Standards and other members of the Steering Group. All members have signed up to a strict code of practice and agree to work with Trading Standards in the unlikely event of a dispute.

Our registered traders cover a wide range of home improvements from large building works to small jobs such as fixing a leaky tap. It is very easy to find a trader - you can either search on the website at www.traderregister.org.uk or telephone our call centre on 0345 678 9000. A representative will do the search and post out the results. We feel that this is a really valuable service for the local community. In the current economic climate we are seeing an increase in the number of complaints about rogue traders and would like to see more people using the Trader Register.
