Proposals for Village Street Signs - April 2011
As part of our Queen’s Jubilee Year celebrations, LWPC is considering replacing all parish street signs, village entry signs and finger posts with high quality bespoke signs that would raise the profile and ambience in the parish and display our heritage. Initial consultations with residents have indicated overwhelming support, therefore LWPC intends to apply to the HLSM Community Fund to finance this project.
The designs for the Village Entry signs are being considered, and they could form part of 'gateway' traffic calming measures. A preferred design style is illustrated on the right and will be discussed at the LWPC Annual Open Meeting on 18th April 2011.
Existing street signs would be replaced with polyurethane signs as per example on the left.
A village "Interpretation" Sign - one for Little Wenlock and one for New Works, depicting schematic maps of walks, places of interest and history, are possible additional features. These "Interpretation" signs would be located in a central position in the villages. See example on the right.
Update 25 July 2011
Detailed proposals have been finalised for the replacement of Street Signs, Village Entry Signs and Interpretation Boards. Quotations for the work of designing, supplying and installing these signs have been obtained.
An application for funding was sent to the Huntington Lane Surface Mine Community Fund in July 2011. It is hoped that the application is approved at a meeting to be held in November 2011, and if so, the signs should be installed prior to the Queen's Jubilee celebrations.
These new signs as well as enhancing the appearance and character of the village, will form part of traffic calming measures, provide additional new signs for Steeraway, Coalmoor, Littleworth and Huntington, and present useful information for visitors about the village.
Funding for replacement finger posts will now be applied for during 2012 as phase 2 of this project.
Update 7th November 2011
At a meeting of Huntington Lane Surface Mine Funding Committee held on 7th November 2011, the application for replacement and new village signs was considered.
Part approval was granted for Village Entry Signs and Interpretation Boards. Orders for manufacture and installation can now be placed, with the aim of signs being available prior to Queen's Jubilee celebrations in 2012.
Subject to finance being available later in the funding process, an application for Street Signs may be submitted during 2012 / 2013.
Celebrating the Royal Wedding April 2011
On the day after the Royal Wedding of William and Catherine, a family fun day celebration was held on the village playing field. The weather was kind, and all took part in a range of games, which included skittles, a "smite" championship, boules, soft ball target and races for all ages. A hog roast, veggie BBQ, and a licensed bar were provided. Even the village dogs had the opportunity to perform by taking part in competitions for "waggiest tail", "most looks like owner" etc. All said that they had enjoyed a fantastic event, and can we have more of the same in the village.

HM Queen's Diamond Jubilee - preparations
Her Majesty will be celebrating her Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years of her reign in 2012. The national focus will fall on the weekend of 2nd – 5th June. The Parish Council is exploring ways in which the parish can celebrate this event. It hopes to work in cooperation with other interested groups within the parish and is at this stage exploring ideas as to what form the community celebrations should take. If you have any ideas would you please pass them onto the Parish Clerk in writing.
Little Wenlock Cemetery Improvements - March 2011
Telford & Wrekin Borough Council decided during August 2010 to distribute funds to worthy causes throughout the Borough. The Parochial Church Council had already identified the need to clear the overgrown area at the south-west end of the cemetery in Witchwell Lane and submitted this project for consideration. The support shown by residents in the village towards this project persuaded the Borough Council to include this among those to be grant aided.
Work will be completed during Spring 2011, and we look forward to fresh shoots of green grass appearing. The cemetery is already looking so much better and will provide not only a necessary service to families of all those residents in the village who wish to be interred here but also a tranquil and beautiful spot for those who include it in a walk around the village using the Tom Pickering benches. Thank you to everyone who supported us, and thanks to John Corley who has carried out the work.
