Flicks in the Sticks

Flicks in the Sticks” has once again been booked to screen films in the Village Hall each month during the coming season.

Films are shown on our new 3.7 m x 2.7m screen in the main hall.

The programme of films for the new season is:

"Morris - A life with bells on"   Friday 15th January 2010

The English folk dance Morris is not just an innocent pub pastime involving hanky-waving and bearded men with staffs, it has its politics-laden, ultra-competitive side too. Under the auspices of the governing Morris Circle, dance troops throughout England compete against each other. The Millsham Morris troop and its avant-garde leader Derecq Twist is determined to achieve Morris perfection. "the sort of film that the British does best"

“Two men went to war” Friday 19th February 2010

Set in 1942 during World War II, this is eccentric but true tale (based on 'Amateur Commandos' by Raymond Foxall) begins at a backwater barracks, where Sergeant Peter King and Private Leslie Cuthbertson practice the art of dentistry. Faced by one rejection too many to see frontline duty, they decide to take matters into their own hands and set off on a mission, to engage in active combat on their own behalf in France against the Germans. Armed with weapons and dentistry equipment, of course, they must first cross the channel in secret. A charming film about two men desperate to live out their dreams.

"A Bunch of Amateurs" Friday 26th March 2010

A fading LA action star (Burt Reynolds) finds himself caught between a rock and a Bard place after being duped into taking a gig as King Lear in Stratford, England. Problem is, this Stratford is not quite upon-Avon, but firmly placed in wet and muddy Suffolk. One-time Miss Moneypenny Samantha Bond is a firm but sweet director determined the play’s the thing in an undemanding comedy chosen for 2008’s Royal Film Performance. Also starring Imelda Staunton and Derek Jacobi.

"Very Annie Mary" Friday 16th April 2010

Very Annie-Mary is a proudly Welsh film, celebrating the eccentricity of a small town in the valleys where the inhabitants certainly suffer deprivation but are by no means isolated from the outside world. They simply plough their own furrow. None more so than Annie-Mary herself, a 30-year-old woman trapped in gawky adolescence by the death of her mother and subsequent years of repression by her father, the Pavarotti-obsessed town baker (brilliant Jonathan Pryce). In a plot slightly reminiscent of Little Voice, she has lost her prize-winning singing voice, apparently forever.

Start time is 7.30 pm Entrance £4. Coffee and tea are served at the interval.

Birmingham Repertory Theatre are touring with a new play "Cling to me like ivy"

This is the story of Jewish bride to be, Rivka, who just wants the perfect wedding. She has the man, the dress, the wig and two weeks to go… then a chance remark by Victoria Beckham casts doubt on the wig and everything starts to unravel. She finds herself far from home, halfway up a tree and caught up in the eviction of an anti-road protest, not knowing whether she’ll be able to go back to where she came from, or whether she wants to. Has the power of celebrity gone too far?

Age range: Ages 12+

They will perform at the Village Hall on Saturday 6th March 2010 at 7.30 pm.

Tickets £6.00 each
