BBC Radio 4’s “Any Questions” came to Little Wenlock Village Hall on Friday 13th August, broadcast live and chaired by Jonathan Dimbleby. The Village Hall was filled to capacity with approx 200 people attending.

People living near the site of a planned opencast mine in Shropshire are to bombard coal bosses with a list of demands to safeguard their quality of life.

Mining plans get Minister’s go-ahead

Controversial proposals to open cast mine 900,000 tonnes of coal in the shadow of The Wrekin have been allowed by a Government minister, it was announced today.

UK Coal had appealed after Telford & Wrekin Council failed to come to a decision over its application for the site at Huntington Lane, between New Works and Little Wenlock, and a public inquiry was held.

But Secretary of State John Denham has backed the planning inspector, Andrew Mead, who recommended the appeal be allowed, and granted permission.

Little Wenlock Wheeze

The 8th running of the Little Wenlock Wheeze took place on Sunday, 13th September 2009 when 54 people entered.

1st was Robin Sedman-Smith of Telford A C in a time of 24:09 with 1st lady Amanda Purves of Newport and District R C in 31:50.

The first male villager home was Ed Christie and Ceri Christie was the first lady.

Next year we hope to run the event again on Sunday, 12th September 2010 at 11 am and the organizers would like to see more local people take up the challenge.

A big thank you to all who helped make this event so successful – a total of £500 was raised towards the village hall and playing field.

Community Harvest Celebrations

Do join our special on community harvest celebrations Sunday September 27th and raise much-needed funds for Self Help Africa.

Refurbishments prevented us holding our annual St Lawrence harvest festival last year and we don’t have a community produce show. So we thought we’d do something special this autumn to celebrate our green-fingered community and support local, dedicated charity, Self Help Africa (which has recently grown out of Wellington-based Harvest Help). 
Displays of locally-grown flowers, fruit and vegetables by all our main community groups will be on show in church throughout the day. 
A special children’s Vegetable Creatures competition will be run, with prizes for all entries presented at our informal 11.00 am family service at which the produce displays will be unveiled. 

Tea and home-made cakes will be served following the service from 11.45, giving everyone the chance to get thoroughly refreshed while viewing the displays and Creatures. 
A special collection will be taken for Self Help Africa during the service and cash donations or cheques (payable to St Lawrence PCC, Little Wenlock) accepted from visitors at any time.

Please join us if you can, even if Church isn’t your ‘thing’.
In celebrating our community’s good fortune, we want to raise  St Lawrence’s new roof with some favourite hymns and as much funding as we can for those in such desperate need across Africa.

Recycling makes us money!

In early 2009, the newspapers tell us that recycled materials are being stored in warehouses, shipped to China, or even sent to landfill. This is not true for the papers put in our paper bank here in Little Wenlock. It is delivered direct to a Paper Mill located in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, and recycled into newsprint which is used for printing newspapers within the UK. Not only that we are paid £5 per tonne for the paper itself, plus around £40 per tonne from the Council for keeping it out of landfill. This added up to our local paper bank raising over £450 last year for local funds. This sum has been rising each year and has now raised a total of over £4000.

So please support our local paper bank behind the Huntsman by bringing your newspapers, magazines, office paper, junk mail, catalogues, old phone books and yellow pages.
